Math Circle- Atomic Fingerprints

I led the Greater Richmond Math Circle in a lesson called Atomic Fingerprints:

Each element can emit a characteristic pattern of light that scientists can use to identify it.  These can be thought of as atomic fingerprints.  Students will learn about light as electromagnetic waves with properties such as energy and wavelength.  We will learn to associate wavelength numbers with colors and then identify the some mystery elements.
